ANNOUNCEMENTS

Check out the new Pike County Estate Inventories, 1822-1865, Listing Slaves by Gene McGrady (digital images linked). Allow adequate time for the images to open.

Ancestry has now added Georgia's 1890 property tax digest in digital format to their online holdings. After the basic search for someone in Georgia, select the Census & Voter Lists tab in the left panel. Then narrow the search further by selecting 1890's. Hall County's tax digest was microfilmed but somehow did not make it into the collection. Ancestry has been informed but there is no indication when this might be available. This resource helps replace the missing 1890 census for Georgia. You don't have to have a personal subscription to access this collection. Most libraries with genealogical collections have subscriptions to ancestry. A search for my Francis M. Crawley in Pike County, Georgia showed him living in militia district 540 in the Milner area with 310 acres land. Also listed are land lot numbers and the values of his land holdings, his household furniture, jewelry, livestock, plantation tools, and other property. Not only does this resource help locate a person in time and place, but it supplies lifestyle information and helps "add flesh to the bones" for a family history.

Check out the new Poor School Records (Partial) by Stephanie Bradley. New districts have been added. This is an excellent source to prove parent-children relationships for the non-landowning population.
The Probate Court has marriage and estate records and wills. The Superior Court has divorce, civil court, and land records from 1822. The Georgia Department of Archive and History has many of these records on microfilm. A current list of Pike County county records on microfilm at the Georgia Archives can be found at Georgia Archives County Microfilm for Pike County. Click on "Pike County Cards PDF" and use page up or page down to flip through the cards. These are the actual county index cards at the Georgia Archives microfilm room in digital format. This resource is very helpful in planning a research trip to the Georgia Archives and also in coming up with citation information. Also, a list appears here.

Pike County, Georgia History

Pike County was formed in 1822 from the Western portion of Monroe County. Formation Maps can be found here. Originally, the county seat was set up near Riley Crossroads, in the newly created town of Newnan. However, when Upson County was formed in 1825 from the lower portion of Pike County and part of Crawford County, the county seat of Newnan was too far from the center of the county. Soon the town of Zebulon was laid out and in November 1825 the legislature permanently set Zebulon as the county seat.

In 1851 the most Northern part of the county was given to Spalding County. The boundaries of Pike County remained unchanged from 1851 until 1920, when some of the eastern portion of Pike County became part of the newly formed Lamar County.

Pike County and the town of Zebulon were named after Zebulon Montgomery Pike, noted soldier and explorer. Zebulon was born January 5, 1779 in Lamberton, New Jersey to Major Zebulon Pike and Isabella Brown. As a soldier and explorer he traveled large portions of the American West, made an unsuccessful attempt to reach the summit of the peak that bears his name, and died during the attack on York (now Toronto), Canada on April 27, 1813 during the war with Great Britain.

Other towns in Pike County at this time are: Concord, Meansville, Hollonville, Lifsey Springs, Williamson, and Molena.

The Pike County courthouse in Zebulon has civil court and land records from 1823. Tax records are available 1825-59 and 1864-72.
